Spend a few minutes speaking with Lawrence Funk, aka Lawrence the Barber, and one thought will repeatedly run through your head, “This man is brilliant.” But a few years ago, he was likely viewed as crazy.

The story behind Funk's Barbershop

Lawrence knew exactly what he wanted as soon as he began his career in barbering. Originally from Wisconsin, his journey took him to Chicago, where he worked tirelessly- first in other shops, then in a shop he created the upper level of his home- all towards achieving his goal. Many dismissed his plans, but he was confident in what he was doing and what he would accomplish. No one questions Lawrence’s vision now. On June 15, Lawrence celebrated the 2nd anniversary of Funk’s Barbershop, an establishment unlike any other. Vintage chairs, signs, razors, moustache cups, barber poles: each element of the room down to the light fixtures has been carefully selected to create an aesthetic that takes traditional barbershop masculinity and brings something to it that’s clean, sharp, modern and 100% Lawrence. The ambience is only rivalled by the professionalism of the staff. Lawrence has composed a team of barbers who deliver impeccable haircuts and patrons are treated to first class service from the shop’s Barber Butlers.

Highlights of the day

With this attention to his shop and his craft, it is no surprise that the owner of Funk’s Barbershop and Funk’s Custom Clippers threw a truly memorable party. This was a celebration for all of Chicago and crowds gathered for the day’s attractions. The day was filled with drinks, special guests cutting hair (including Booksy's own Barber Since 98, Oscar Torres!) and performances by a real barbershop quartet. The event also attracted the attention of Grammy-nominated rapper Vic Mensa and Ana Belaval of WGN Channel 9 news, who broadcasted the event.

Putting the 'fun' in fundraising

The most remarkable and heartwarming aspect of the day was its charitable

focus. Funk’s Barbershop offered its cuts at 50 cents each, donating the rest of the proceeds to the Chicago Public Schools. Amidst all the fun and energy, it also held a silent auction to raise money for the cause. (This is not the first time Funk’s has contributed to the city. He regularly works with the homeless of the area. It is not unusual to see a man on the street wearing a Funk’s Barbershop t-shirt.) Lawrence come a long way… and there is no doubt that the future holds more for the business and its extraordinary owner. Now this is certainly something worth celebrating! So congratulations to Funk’s Barbershop! Happy Anniversary, and wishing you many more years to come.
