Safe Fun In The Sun–6 Tips For Summer Hair Care

In the summer our hair is exposed to a number of harmful factors. From hot and dry air, winds, through salty sea water or chlorinated water from the swimming pool, to UV sun rays. With all these potentially damaging elements, how can you properly take care of your hair (and the rest of your body) during this season? Read on to learn more about the essentials of summer hair care.

To avoid damaging, splitting, and drying out your hair in the summer, be sure to pay attention to proper care. Protection against UV radiation, wearing hats, a proper washing routine, moisturizing, and a visit to the hairdresser can help you. Remember, no matter where you spend the summer, your hair will really need that extra care and protection during this season.

Wear hats, caps, or scarfs

When you know you’re going to be out in the sun for a longer time, remember to bring something to cover your head. A hat, cap, or scarf will protect your hair and scalp from harmful UV radiation. This is especially important when you go out with wet hair. The tiny drops  of water on your hair and head will focus the rays on the hair, thus creating an effect similar to bleaching.

If you have color-treated hair, wearing protection on your hair will be especially essential. UV rays can cause the dye to fade out faster. So if you wear a hat or scarf, you can prolong the strength of your hair color.

Use filters to protect against UV rays

Unfortunately, very few people are aware that we should use SPF filters not only on the skin, but also on our hair. What’s worse, there are not many products available on the market that can do this. When choosing a filter, pay attention to its ingredients, this may be tricky. You can of course opt for natural filters. They can be found in:

  • carrot oil (SPF 38-40)
  • raspberry seed oil (SPF 28-50)
  • wheat germ oil (SPF 20)
  • soybean oil (SPF 10)
  • avocado butter (SPF 3-6)

Using products that contain these oils effectively protects against UV radiation. Additionally, they will also prevent salt from sticking to your hair when beaching.

Thoroughly wash your hair after swimming

Salt water dries your hair and thus contributes to breakage and split ends. A similar thing can happen when your hair comes in contact with chlorinated water. Before you go swimming, you can cover your hair with oil or conditioner. This will protect your strands and reduce the negative impact of salty or chlorinated water.

However, even if you do this, you should always wash your hair and head after each swim. This way you’ll clean it out of salt or chlorine. Then you can use a mask or conditioner to regenerate and moisturize your hair.

Wear your hair up, avoid heat styling, and be gentle with it

High temps can cause damage to your hair. That’s why during hot summer months it’s important to limit the times you apply heat a straightener or curling iron.

With your hair being more dry in the summer, your strands are more prone to breaking. That’s why you need to be extra careful when brushing your hair and styling it. Opt for loose buns or loose braids. Such hairstyles can prevent further damage to your hair.

Opt for nourishing products

After spending time in the sun, salt water, or pool water, reach for a conditioner or a regenerating mask. If you’re not sure if you chose the right product, look at the ingredients. The best ones have oils–argan, sweet almond or sesame oil. They should also include moisturizing substances like glycerin, honey, or aloe juice. Building substances such as hydrolyzed keratin or milk, silk, and egg proteins, help to strengthen your locks and will go a long way when used continually.

6. Visit your hairdresser

Our summer hair years for some TLC for our hairdresser. During the summer our ends have a tendency to split, and our hair tends to get drier faster. Trimming your hair every 8-10 weeks protects your strands from further damage.

Visit your hairdresser

While you’re at the hair salon, consider getting a regenerating treatment. If you’re not sure which treatment is best for you, consult your hairdresser. They’ll be happy to help and this way you’ll provide your hair with that extra nourishment and care.
