Orchestrated by John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and Confederate sympathizer, the plot was originally intended to be a kidnapping but evolved into a triple assassination attempt aimed at decapitating the Union government. The Plot and the Setting By the spring of 1865, the Confederacy was collapsing. Following Robert E. Leeā€™s surrender at Appomattox, Booth became desperate to avenge the South. He and his co-conspiratorsā€”including Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, and David Heroldā€”planned to kill President Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward simultaneously.
