A cranial prosthesis is the medical term used by the VA for a wig prescribed due to hair loss related to a medical condition such as alopecia, chemotherapy, hormonal imbalance, or other diagnosed scalp and hair loss disorders. This service includes a professional consultation, custom measurement, fitting, and unit selection based on medical need, lifestyle, and comfort. All services are provided with discretion, clinical accuracy, and respect for the veteran’s service and well-being. To begin the process, veterans must request an evaluation from their VA Primary Care Provider or Dermatology Department and obtain a prescription for a cranial prosthesis.
