      BETA PLUS PEEL - Treating Problematic Skin / Acne / Congestion •How it Works: Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that is derived from the bark of a willow tree. Salicylic acid is lipid soluble and in the Beta Plus formulation it’s effective for the removal of commedones (black and whiteheads) and congestion. It’s also extremely anti-inflammatory and will calm aggressive inflammatory reactions in inflammatory acne. There are two concentrations of this treatment, Beta Plus 15% and 20% and both are applied in the same way. The treatment begins by removing all impurities and oils – a cleansing process which is followed either by an exfoliation or degreasing step. Oils might prevent the penetration and action of the peel on your skin so this step is important to the success of the treatment. Our exfoliator contains Cathepsin D – an ingredient that mimics the exfoliating enzyme found in your skin. Cathepsin D only removes dry, denatured skin cells, which makes it particularly safe to use in all peel treatments. This preparation phase is followed by the application of the Beta Plus Peel solution which is applied with a gauze. During and directly after application you might experience a light tingling sensation which will be more intense on pimples – especially if they are open. The same is true on dryer skin. The sensation will quickly dissipate and soon become more comfortable. The peel will only be on your skin for a maximum of 10 minutes and as with any time dependent chemical peel, it must be neutralised to stop its action. By applying a neutralising agent all the active peel molecules are changed to salts. This chemical reaction produces heat so a quick tingle is very normal during this phase of the treatment. The neutralisation process is followed by a short massage at which point the skin is soothed and calmed and lost oils are replaced. Excessive extractions are not necessary and this peel does most of the work; it may be necessary to remove larger lesions. The application of moisturiser and sunscreen completes the treatment. •After your treatment: You skin will feel hydrated, plump and glowing. A little redness is normal – especially if you have active papules and pustules (pimples). This will resolve within a few hours or the following day. •What to expect in the week after your treatment: The morning after the treatment your skin may feel sensitive in the areas where extractions were performed and even a little tight and dry. If this is the case, add more moisturiser to your skin. Typically though, you can continue with your daily routine. If however your skin feels very dry – immediately contact your skin care therapist. You may need to use one of the Serra products or Lamelle Barrier Repair cream for a few days. •Special care post-treatment: *Protect your skin by avoiding sun exposure and apply your sunscreen every morning. *No treatments for 14 days on the treated area.       BETA PEEL - Treating Hyperpigmentation Hyper pigmentation or pigmentation refers to darker areas of pigment on the skin. The causes to this condition might vary but the treatment is very much aligned. In skin care units we mostly see three types of hyper pigmentation: 1. Solar pigmentation, also know as age spots or liver spots: this is caused by sun damage to the skin and is more prevalent in lighter more aged skins. 2. Post Inflammatory Hyper (PIH) pigmentation is caused by any form of inflammatory processes in the skin. Mostly the cause is related to inflammatory acne. In this case it might be more important to treat the acne before attempting to treat the hyper pigmentation. 3. Melasma or hormonal pigmentation, this type of pigmentation irregularity is linked to changes in hormonal status. It might be worsened by changes in contraception, pregnancy and infertility treatments. The challenge with hormonal pigmentation is that we know how pigmentation is formed in the body. We understand all the factors that contribute but we are still not sure exactly which hormone is related to the problem. Even though the condition is found mostly in woman there is also a 10% incidence in males. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that is derived from the bark of a willow tree. Salicylic acid in lipid soluble and in the Beta Peel formulation it is used for its effect on the lipid found in the corneum of the skin. This self neutralising formulation is also effective in commedones (Black and whiteheads) and congestion. The treatment will, especially with the first few treatments, cause some dryness of skin and flaking. There are three concentrations of this treatment, Beta Peel 15%. Beta Peel 20% and Beta Peel 30%. The latter is only performed in skin care units where there is a doctor involved. •How it works: All impurities and oils are removed during the cleansing process. The next step, degreasing the skin, will remove oils that might prevent the penetration and action of the peel on your skin. This preparation phase is then followed by application of Beta Peel. The solution will be applied to your skin with gauze. Within a few second of applying the solution you will experience an intense tingling sensation. Your skin care therapist will fan your skin if necessary and will help you through this tingling. This will only last for up to three minutes and will dissipate and become more comfortable. Depending on what the therapist is seeing on your skin, how many peels you have had and the results you would want to achieve your therapist might decide to apply a second and even third layer of the solution. When the tingling has subsided the peel solution has self neutralised so there is not neutralising process involved in this treatment. The treatment is completed with moisturiser and sunscreen application. •Skin directly after the treatment: Your skin might feel a bit sensitive directly after this treatment. A little bit of redness is very normal and should dissipate very quickly. •What you can expect in the week after your treatment: Depending on when the treatment has been done your therapist will indicate if you need to cleanse in the evening and start applying your barrier repair cream. The next morning your skin should be tight and dry. Stop all treatment products except for your Brighter concentrate (if you are using it) in the flaking phase and apply Restorative Balm mornings and evenings.
