I visited The Avenue yesterday for a haircut, and overall, the experience was quite mixed. Starting with the positives: The staff were genuinely poli...te and welcoming. I was offered a drink, and the general interaction was pleasant — unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. Now to the main issues: 1. Hygiene — serious concerns The salon overall felt quite dirty. Hair was everywhere — on the floor, around the workstations, and even in places on the walls. I did see barbers sweeping after clients, but it gave the impression that this was the only cleaning being done. It doesn’t look like a proper deep clean has been done in quite some time. There were also visible old stains and marks around fixed items and cables — the kind that build up when areas are cleaned around, but not properly underneath or behind them. The tools (including the shaver) were in poor condition, with visible hair and even dandruff from previous clients. This goes beyond appearance and raises real hygiene concerns. 2. Haircut quality The haircut was done quickly but poorly — honestly, one of the worst I’ve had. The fade has a visible harsh line, and there are uneven patches where hair is sticking out. From a distance, it looks acceptable, but up close, it’s clear the work lacks proper skill and attention to detail. 3. Payment confusion I was charged in advance when booking, so I assumed the haircut was already paid for. At the end, I was told they only accept cash — it turned out the initial payment was just a deposit. This wasn’t made clear beforehand. Another staff member later offered card payment, but overall the process felt disorganised. 4. Inconsistent service I asked for a hair wash — my barber initially agreed, then checked with another colleague (possibly the manager), and I was told they no longer offer this service. This is despite the clear presence of on-site washing facilities, which felt odd and inconsistent. Overall For £24, I expected at least a decent haircut and basic hygiene standards. Unfortunately, I got neither. To be honest, I’m quite surprised this place has nearly 200 five-star reviews — my experience was very different. ———- Following the salon’s reply, I was informed that my appointment was with a “junior barber”. However, when booking online, the only options available were “Barber” or “Senior Barber” — there was no mention of a junior level or reduced experience. This was not explained at any stage, so it feels misleading to use this as justification after the fact.

We take pride in our customer service, standards of cutting, and hygiene. There is no excuse if this fell short. We are a busy shop (around 45 haircuts a day), with daily cleaning and a professional deep clean each weekend. As your appointment was during a peak period, we apologise if standards were not met and will address this. Regarding your haircut, we operate a tiered pricing system. You were booked with a junior barber, which is reflected in the £24 price. Our junior staff follow structured weekly training to progress to senior level. We’d like to offer you a complimentary haircut with one of our senior barbers so you can experience the level reflected in our 200+ 5-star reviews. Our booking system includes a no-show policy agreed to at booking, which states a 50% charge if cancelled within 24 hours or missed. This is also confirmed by email and states we are a cash business. We apologise for any confusion. The hair wash issue was our error. Our junior barber misunderstood that the basin is reserved for hair systems services. We also currently do not offer wash and cut services due to time constraints, and we apologise for this. Thank you for your feedback—it helps us improve.
